Data warehouse modernization
Data warehouse modernization: pick the architecture, then migrate in waves.
A warehouse migration is a change of platform and a chance to retire what nobody uses. The order matters: decide the target, plan the waves, and keep the old system alive until the numbers match.
The short answer
Data warehouse modernization moves an aging warehouse, such as Teradata, Netezza or Greenplum, to a platform that fits current needs: a cloud warehouse, a lakehouse or a Postgres-based MPP database. Ace8 chooses the target from your workload, converts SQL and loaders, migrates in waves and validates every report against the source.
Choice
Which warehouse architecture should you move to?
No architecture wins in general. The workload, skills and three-year cost decide.
| Architecture | Examples | Good fit when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud data warehouse | Snowflake | SQL analytics, many consumers, variable demand | Cost needs governance |
| Lakehouse | Databricks | Warehouse plus data science, streaming and open formats | More platform to learn |
| Postgres-based MPP | Apache Cloudberry, WarehousePG | Open-source, on-premises or cost-sensitive needs | You operate it, or pay a vendor to |
| Stay and optimize | Existing platform | Stable workload and acceptable licence | Recurring cost and platform risk |
Method
How do you migrate a warehouse without a big-bang cutover?
Waves reduce risk. Each wave carries a set of related tables, the jobs that load them and the reports that read them.
- 1
Usage analysis
Find what is queried and what is not. Retire unused objects.
- 2
Dependency map
Trace sources, loads, transformations and consumers.
- 3
Wave plan
Group by subject area. Start with a low-risk wave to prove the pipeline.
- 4
Convert and load
Convert SQL and loaders, then load history and sync changes.
- 5
Parallel run and diff
Compare outputs between old and new for each wave.
- 6
Switch and retire
Move consumers, then decommission when the last wave holds.
Beyond the database
What about the pipelines and reports?
A warehouse is mostly what feeds it and reads it. ETL jobs, schedulers, BI semantic layers and extracts to other systems all point at the old platform. They are part of the scope. Plan to move them in the same waves as the tables they use.
Where the feeds are integration flows, Duczer East, a sister practice of AceMQ, covers integration work. Where the consumers are applications, see legacy application modernization.
Cost
What does a warehouse migration cost?
We show the factors and the formula in the assessment. Any figure quoted before that would be a guess.
- Volume of SQL, procedures and loader code.
- Number of reports and downstream consumers.
- Data volume and the time to move it.
- Dual-running period.
- Run cost of the new platform, which depends on design and governance.
Trust
How do you know the new warehouse is right?
Row counts, checksums and report-level diffs for every wave, kept in a log. A converted query that runs is not proof of correctness. We compare the numbers business users read, and an engineer reviews every difference. See our method and, for industries that audit this, insurance and financial services.
Moving an aging warehouse to a platform that fits current needs, such as a cloud warehouse, lakehouse or Postgres-based MPP, including its SQL, loaders and reports.
Analyze usage, map dependencies, plan waves, convert SQL and loaders, load data, run old and new in parallel, compare, then switch and retire.
Snowflake suits SQL-centric analytics with many consumers. Databricks suits warehouse plus data science. Postgres-based MPP suits open-source or on-premises needs.
Months for most warehouses. Waves show progress earlier than a single cutover.
No. Usage analysis often finds tables and jobs that can be retired.
Teradata, Netezza, Greenplum and Oracle are the main sources. See the pages for each.
