AWS Transform for .NET: what to expect and what to check.

An AI-assisted service from AWS for porting .NET code. Useful for repetitive work. It does not decide your target or prove your application still works.

The short answer

AWS Transform for .NET is an AWS service that uses AI to help port .NET applications to modern .NET so they can run on Linux. It analyzes code, proposes changes and reports what it did. It does not remove the need for tests, a decision on blockers such as Web Forms, or engineer review of the result.

01Definition

What is AWS Transform for .NET?

It is part of the AWS Transform family of AI-assisted modernization services. For .NET, its stated purpose is to port applications from .NET Framework to cross-platform .NET. It is a sibling of the Java upgrade capability described on the AWS Transform page.

Ace8 is not affiliated with AWS. This guide describes how to evaluate the tool, not a partnership.

02Scope

What does it automate?

Check the current AWS documentation for the exact scope. In general, tools of this kind help with the repetitive parts of a port.

  • Analyzing a solution for incompatible APIs and packages.
  • Converting project files and package references.
  • Proposing code edits for APIs that changed.
  • Reporting what it changed and what it could not.

03Limits

What does it not decide?

04Review

How should you review its output?

  1. 01

    Run it on a copy

Use a branch of a non-critical application, with the tests running before and after.

  2. 02

    Read every diff

A reviewer checks each proposed change, not just the summary report.

  3. 03

    Compare behavior

Run old and new on the same inputs and compare outputs.

  4. 04

    Record the gaps

List what the tool left for people. That list is your real effort estimate.

05Cost

What does it cost?

Billing for AWS Transform is set by AWS and has changed over time, so check the current pricing page. The tool charge is usually a small part of a project. Engineering time, testing and the run environment cost more. See AWS Transform pricing for the cost math we use for the Java service.

06Evidence

What have we tested?

Ace8 has not yet run AWS Transform for .NET on a sample application, so this guide gives no measured results. When we do, the run and its findings will be linked here.

07Next step

How does Ace8 help?

Ace8 is the AI-assisted application modernization practice of AceMQ. We start with an assessment, use tools such as this one as drafts, test every step and have an engineer review the output. For .NET we work with a vetted specialist partner where needed.

The service page is .NET Framework migration. To start, request the modernization assessment.
