Alternatives

vFunction alternatives, sorted by the task you need done.

Architecture analysis and code change are different jobs. Most tools do one well. Here is who covers what.

The short answer

vFunction analyzes a Java or .NET application's architecture to show how it could be split into services. Analysis is not the same as changing the code. Alternatives depend on the task: architecture analysis, decomposition planning, automated code change, or engineering to execute and test the split. Pick by task, not by brand.

Definition

What does vFunction do?

vFunction describes its product as architectural observability. It analyzes an application, using static and runtime information, to show its structure: domains, dependencies, dead code and candidate service boundaries. The output helps an architect decide how to decompose a monolith.

This is from the vendor's public descriptions. Check its current documentation for supported languages and features. We have not benchmarked vFunction, so this page makes no performance claim about it.

The gap

What does analysis leave undone?

Knowing where to cut is one job. Making the cut is another. Someone still has to extract the code, move or split data, rewrite calls into network calls, write the tests that prove behavior held and run both versions in parallel during cutover.

That is engineering work, whichever analysis tool produced the map. A decomposition diagram does not change a line of production code.

Matrix

Which option covers which task?

The columns are categories, not endorsements. A project usually combines two or three of them.

Options

What are the alternatives to vFunction?

  • Other architecture and portfolio analysis tools. Static analysis and application-portfolio products give dependency maps and complexity scores. Compare supported languages and whether they use runtime data.
  • Open-source assessment. Konveyor is an open-source toolkit for assessing and planning application migration, mostly toward containers and Kubernetes.
  • Runtime tracing. Distributed tracing and profilers show real call paths in production. They are raw data, with no decomposition proposal.
  • Design-level methods. Event storming and domain-driven design sessions with the people who know the business, plus architecture-test libraries to enforce boundaries once agreed.
  • AI code tools. AWS Transform and GitHub Copilot app modernization change code but do not replace an architecture decision.
  • An engineering partner. A team that analyzes, decomposes, builds and tests the result. See monolith to microservices.

Before you buy

Should you split the monolith at all?

Not always. A monolith on a current runtime with good tests may be better left whole, with its modules cleaned up. Splitting adds network calls, data ownership questions and operational load. We use a scoring sheet for the decision and describe it on the monolith to microservices page.

The cheaper first step is often an upgrade and a clean-up: current Java, clear module boundaries, tests. That also improves the quality of any later analysis.

Ace8

Where does Ace8 fit?

Ace8 is the AI-assisted application modernization practice of AceMQ. We do not sell an analysis product. We run assessments and the engineering that follows, and we use whichever analysis tool fits the estate, including the ones above. Our AI tools benchmark covers the code-change tools; results are pending.

Start with the modernization assessment if you want a named target and a phased plan before committing to a tool.

FAQ

Frequently asked.

Something else on your mind? Ask an engineer.

A vendor of architectural analysis software for Java and .NET applications. It describes its product as architectural observability, used to plan decomposition of monoliths.

Know the cost before anything moves.

A fixed-price assessment gives you the inventory, the risk score and a phased plan. Scope and cost are fixed before the migration starts.
